I want to buy a copy of this book. I had it when I was a kid but must have given it away when I was a ‘cool’ teenager. You can only buy it second hand now and a reviewer on Amazon has warned that many copies do not come with the die and cards that it should come with. I have emailed many sellers and most of them have failed to respond or admitted that the set is not complete. Most listings fail to mention if the die and cards are present (possibly because the sellers do not realise it should come with it). *sigh*

I married someone I met online, so, um, yeah… I also have numerous friends, some who I’ve subsequently met in RL, some I haven’t, but I still class them as friends.

I say it with a hard ‘G’ because 20 years ago when I started messing with GIFs there was no one to tell me how to pronounce it correctly. I chose the most logical pronunciation and went with it. When you get used to saying something a certain way for 20 years… that’s pretty much how you are going to say it no matter how incorrect someone tells you it is.

It’s like someone trying to tell you “Sun” is actually pronounced wombatnards. It’s going to take an awful lot of effort to train your brain to say “I got a really bad wombatnardsburn today. I should have used more wombatnardsblock.”

Also, I’m pretty sure that the OED takes a descriptive approach to language rather prescriptive; that is to say it will reflect what is actually happening with language not what someone thinks should be happening. The nature of language is that it evolves - once a word is out there it is beyond an individual’s control what happens to it.

Sometimes we must turn to other languages to find le mot juste. Here are a whole bunch of foreign words with no direct English equivalent.

1. Kummerspeck (German)
Excess weight gained from emotional overeating. Literally, grief bacon.

2. Shemomedjamo (Georgian)
You know when you’re really full, but your meal is just so delicious, you can’t stop eating it? The Georgians feel your pain. This word means, “I accidentally ate the whole thing.”

3. Tartle (Scots)
The nearly onomatopoeic word for that panicky hesitation just before you have to introduce someone whose name you can’t quite remember.

4. Mamihlapinatapai (Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego)
This word captures that special look shared between two people, when both are wishing that the other would do something that they both want, but neither want to do.

5. Backpfeifengesicht (German)
A face badly in need of a fist.
