I guess you can call me no one!
I’ve always known I was a nobody.
They’ve clearly not talked to any actual nerds.
While I personally like the show, most feminist I know absolutely despise this show.
I like the show too, and I am a feminist. That doesn’t mean I don’t have problems with the way some of the female characters are portrayed. The first female character we are introduced to is Penny: blonde, beautiful and not very bright (so we are at first given the impression anyway). The next female character to appear in the show is Leslie Winkler. She’s very smart, wears glasses and isn’t as attractive as Penny. So far so stereotypical.
However, I would argue that as time goes on the viewer begins to realise that Penny is a lot smarter than she at first appears. But it did still annoy me that at the beginning she was the one female character and she was portrayed as being a ‘dumb blonde’.
I also really like the character of Amy - possibly because she reminds me a bit of me.
Oh, and my boyfriend is a ‘geek’ and he loves the show too.
Just as it can be annoying when writers of sitcoms make generalisations about certain types of people, maybe we shouldn’t generalise about who likes to watch certain television programmes.
But then I would say that - I enjoy the show. :P
